No matter what type of training you do, the benefits of a skipping rope can’t be understated. There’s a reason why the best athletes in the world – from combat fighters through to CrossFit athletes – spend plenty of time with a skipping rope.
Skipping ropes are an extremely portable piece of equipment. They are an easy way to include some aerobic conditioning into your program and are an excellent travel buddy. It’s easy to elevate your heart rate without the hassle of transporting machines or small weights. In addition, skipping ropes are a great tool for working on coordination, and coordination under fatigue.
There are a few elements to consider when purchasing your rope. One of the most important factors is handle type. The variables in handle types range are spin, weight and grip. Some ropes will come with a handle that does not move, while others will have movement in the handle. Handles with spin are made with ball bearings to help promote efficiency in skipping mechanics (you don’t have to work as hard to spin the cable) with some even having a handle that does not move, but an eyelet that the cable hooks in to in order to create a smooth spin.
The type of handle you choose to buy is very individual to you and should be something you experiment with and suit to your specific needs. Some ropes will also come with a smooth plastic or metal handle, a handle with knurling or a handles covered in tape.
This is also the same for cable type – some come coated in plastic whereas others do not. Different colours may also stand out to you more, which for some people can be a great aid whilst they are skipping as they can more easily see where the rope is.
Some individuals are even unable to skip if it’s too noisy and they cannot hear the rope. Some cables will be thicker than others, whereas speed ropes will usually be light, uncoated and flexible.
The type of rope you buy is very goal dependent, and as your skill levels increase and your goals change, there is potential you will change ropes over your fitness journey. Experimenting with what works best for you is a good place to start (finding friends and trying out their ropes is a good option!).
Lastly, make sure that your home gym setup allows enough space for skipping, whilst at the same time the chosen surface minimises damage on your rope. You will need an area in your gym where there are no overhanging lights in the way, as well as proper flooring that won’t interrupt your skipping (avoid concrete, grass and most kinds of turf). Hard surfaces in particular will destroy the plastic coating (if the rope has it), and eventually the cable itself. No one wants cable stuck in their leg after a few mistakes skipping.
